What True Life Baptist Church Believes
The following is a part of what we believe. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us.
The Holy Scriptures
We believe the Scriptures teach that the Holy Bible was written by men supernaturally inspired, and is a perfect treasure of heavenly instruction; that it has God as its Author, salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture of error for its matter; that it reveals the principle by which God will judge us; and therefore is, and shall remain to the end of the world, the only complete and final revelation of the will of God to man, the true centre of all Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and opinions should be tried.
a. By the “Holy Bible” we mean that collection of sixty-six books from Genesis to Revelation, divinely preserved in the English language and commonly known as the Authorized, King James Version of 1611 A.D.
b. By “inspiration” we mean that all books of the Bible were written down by holy men of God as they were supernaturally moved by the Holy Ghost, in a definite yet inexplicable way so as to record the very words and sense of God though conveyed within their own literary styles; that such writings are free from all error and from all omission as no other writings have been or ever will be; that the Bible does not merely contain the Word of God, but is the very Word of God.
c. The Scriptures shall be interpreted according to their normal grammatical-historical meaning, and the Pastor shall determine all issues of interpretation and meaning.

Dispensationalism
We believe that the Scriptures interpreted in their natural, literal sense reveal divinely determined dispensations or rules of life, which define man’s responsibilities in successive ages. These dispensations are not ways of salvation, but rather are divinely ordered stewardships by which God directs man according to His purpose. Three of these dispensations, the Law, the Church, and the Kingdom, are the subjects of detailed revelation in Scripture.

The Godhead
We believe the Scriptures teach that there is one, and only one, living and true God, an infinite, intelligent Spirit, the Maker and supreme Ruler of Heaven and earth; inexpressibly glorious in holiness, and worthy of all possible honour, confidence, and love; that in the unity of the Godhead there are three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; equal in every divine perfection, and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption.
a. Of God the Father
We believe the Scriptures teach that God the Father reigns with providential care over His universe, His creatures, and the events of human history according to the purposes of His grace; that He is unchangeable in holiness, love and truth; that He is Father in truth to those who are the children of God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and fatherly in His attitude toward all men, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance and receive His gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

b. Of God the Son
We believe the Scriptures teach that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, co-equal, co-essential, and co-eternal with God the Father and God the Holy Ghost, the second Person of the Trinity; that He was born into this world of Mary, a virgin, as no other man was ever born or can ever be born of a woman, and that He is both perfect God and perfect man; that He lived a sinless life, honouring the divine Law by His personal obedience, yet identifying Himself completely with mankind; that He died a substitutionary death on the cross securing redemption through His shed blood for sinners; that He supernaturally rose again the third day with a glorified body, was seen of many, and ascended into the heavens to be exalted and seated at the right hand of the Father where He is the Head over His churches, the Mediator and Advocate with God the Father for all believers; and that He is supernaturally coming again to this world to reign personally and visibly over the earth.

c. Of God the Holy Spirit
We believe the Scriptures teach that the Holy Ghost is a divine Person, co-equal, co-essential, and co-eternal, and co-active with God the Father and God the Son, the third Person of the Trinity; that He was active in the creation of the universe; that He moved holy men of God to write the Bible; that He is the present representative of the Godhead on this earth, and in His relationship to the unbelieving world restrains evil, convicting men of sin, of righteousness, and judgment; that He bears witness to the Truth of the Gospel in preaching and testimony, and is the Agent of the new birth, regenerating those who by faith believe on the Lord Jesus Christ; that He seals, fills, guides, teaches, sanctifies, and comforts all believers, cultivating in them Christian character and bestowing upon them spiritual gifts by which they serve God in the church, these gifts being entirely unlike those falsehoods perpetrated within the so-called “Charismatic Movement” of today.

Mankind
a. The natural state of mankind.
We believe the Scriptures teach that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that in Adam’s sin, the human race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God. Man is totally depraved and, of himself, utterly unable to remedy his lost condition.
Gen 1:26-27; Rom 3:22-23; 5:12; 6:23; Eph 2:1-3; 4:17-19.
b. Human sexuality.
1) We believe the Scriptures teach that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged outside of a marriage between a man and a woman. We believe that any form of homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, bestiality, incest, fornication, adultery, and pornography are sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex. We believe that God disapproves of transgenderism and forbids any attempt to alter one’s gender by surgery or appearance.
Gen 2:24; 19:5, 13; 26:8-9; Lev 18:1-30; Rom 1:26-29; 1Co 5:1; 6:9; 1Th 4:1-8; Heb 13:4.
2) We believe the Scriptures teach that the only marriage approved by God is the joining of one man and one woman. As such, True Life Baptist Church of Edmonton shall only perform a wedding ceremony between one man and one woman, at least one of which is a member in good standing of the Church.
Gen 2:24; Rom 7:2; 1Co 7:10; Eph 5:22-23.
c. Of family relationships.
1) We believe the Scriptures teach that men and women are spiritually equal in position before God but that God has ordained distinct and separate spiritual functions for men and women in the home and the Church. The husband is to be the leader of the home, and men are to be the leaders (Pastors and deacons) of the Church. Accordingly, only men are eligible for licensure and ordination by the Church. Gal 3:28; Col 3:18; 1Ti 2:8-15; 3:3-5, 12)
2) We believe the Scriptures teach that God has ordained the family as the foundational institution of human society. The husband is to love his wife as Christ loves the Church. The wife is to submit herself to the Scriptural leadership of her husband as the Church submits to the headship of Christ. Children are a heritage from the Lord. Parents are responsible for teaching their children spiritual and moral values and leading them through consistent lifestyle example and appropriate discipline, including Scriptural corporal correction.
Gen 1:26-28; Exo 20:12; Deu 6:4-9; Psa 127:3-5; Pro 19:18; 22:15; 23:13-14; Mar 10:6-12; 1Co 7:1-16; Eph 5:21-33; 6:1-4; Col 3:18-21; Heb 13:4; 1Pe 3:1-7.
d. Of divorce and remarriage.
We believe the Scriptures teach that God disapproves of and forbids divorce and intends marriage to last until one of the spouses die. Although divorced and remarried persons or divorced persons may hold positions of service in the Church and be greatly used of God for Christian service, they may not be considered for the offices of Pastor or deacon. As such, True Life Baptist Church of Edmonton, shall only perform weddings where neither bride nor groom has been divorced previously, with their former spouse still living.
Mal 2:14-17; Mat 19:3-12; Rom 7:1-3; 1T 3:2, 12; Tit 1:6.
e. Abortion.
We believe the Scriptures teach that human life begins at conception and that the unborn child is a living human being. Abortion constitutes the unjustified, unexcused taking of unborn human life. Abortion is murder. We reject any teaching that abortions of pregnancies due to rape, incest, birth defects, gender selection, birth or population control, or the physical or mental well being of the mother are acceptable.
Job 3:16; Psa 51:5; 139:14-16; Isa 44:24; 49:1, 5; Jer 1:5; 20:15-18; Luk 1:44.
f. Euthanasia.
We believe the Scriptures teach that the direct taking of an innocent human life is a moral evil, regardless of the intention. We believe that life comes from God, it is a gift of God, and must be respected from conception until natural death; that any act or omission that, in and of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder contrary to the will of God. We do acknowledge that discontinuing medical procedures which are extraordinary or disproportionate to the expected outcome can be a legitimate refusal of over-zealous treatment.
Exo 20:13; 23:7; Mat 5:21; Act 17:28.
g. Civil government.
We believe that civil government is of divine appointment, for the interest and good of human society; that all in authority are to be prayed for, conscientiously honoured and obeyed, except only in things opposed to the revealed will of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the only Lord of the conscience, and the coming Prince of the rulers of the earth; that civil rulers have no rights or control over, or interference with, religious matters; that no ecclesiastical group of religious denomination or organization should be preferred above another by the State; that the State should not impose taxes for the support of any form of religion, and that churches and religious organizations should receive no help from the State, except protection and full freedom in the pursuit of spiritual ends; and that the requiring of an implicit faith and absolute blind obedience destroys liberty of conscience and reason.

Sin
We believe the Scriptures teach that sin is any transgression of or want of conformity to, the revealed will of God; that it has permeated the entire universe, including every realm and affecting every race and species amongst creation; that every man is born with a sin nature, an inherent inclination toward evil which results in acts of wrong-doing; that the wages of sin is death, being separation from God in this life and throughout eternity.

Salvation
We believe the Scriptures teach that the salvation of sinners is wholly of the grace of God, through the merits of the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
a. Of the Law and the Gospel.
We believe the Scriptures teach that the Law of God is the eternal and unchangeable rule of His moral government; that it is holy, just, and good; and that the inability which the Scriptures ascribe to fallen men to fulfill its precepts arises entirely from their sinful nature; to deliver them from which, and to restore them through a Mediator of unfeigned obedience to the holy Law is the one great end of the Gospel, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.
Rom 3:20, 31; Mat 5:17; Luk 16:17; Rom 4:15; 7:7, 12, 14, 22; Gal 3:21; Rom 8:2, 4, 7-8; 10:4; 1Ti 1:5; Heb 8:10.
b. Of God’s Purpose of Grace.
We believe the Scriptures teach that election is the eternal purpose of God, according to which He graciously regenerates, sanctifies, and saves those sinners who by faith believe on the Lord Jesus Christ; that being perfectly consistent with the free agency of man, it all the means in connection with the end: that it is a most glorious display of God's sovereign goodness, being infinitely free, wise, holy, and unchangeable; that it utterly excludes boasting and promotes humility, love, prayer, praise, trust in God, and active imitation of free mercy: that it may be ascertained by its effects in all who truly believe the Gospel; and that it is the foundation of Christian assurance.

c. Of the Freeness of Salvation.
We believe the Scriptures teach that the blessings of salvation are made free to all by the Gospel; that it is the immediate duty of all to accept them by a cordial, penitent, and obedient faith; and that nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinner on earth except his own inherent depravity and voluntary refusal to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, which refusal will subject him to an aggravated condemnation.

d. Of the Atonement for Sin.
We believe the Scriptures teach that the Son of God, by appointment with the Father, freely took upon Him our nature, yet without sin; that by His death on the cross made a full and vicarious atonement for our sins: that His atonement consisted not in setting us an example by his death as a martyr, but was the voluntary substitution of Himself in the sinners’ place, the Just dying for the unjust; that having risen from the dead He is now enthroned in Heaven and, uniting in His wonderful Person the most tender sympathies with divine perfections, He is in every way qualified to be a suitable, compassionate, and all-sufficient Saviour.

e. Of Regeneration.
We believe the Scriptures teach that regeneration, or the “new birth,” is that change wrought in the heart by the Holy Spirit, by which a new nature and a spiritual life, not before possessed, are imparted, and the person becomes a new creature in Christ Jesus; that a holy disposition is given to the mind, the will subdued, the dominion of sin broken, and the affections changed from a love of sin and self, to a love of holiness and God; that the change is instantaneous and not a process, effected not by culture or character, nor by the will of man, but solely through the power of God through the Word of God, in a manner incomprehensible to reason.

The Eternal Security and Assurance of Believers
a. We believe the Scriptures teach all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God’s power and are thus secure in Christ forever.
Joh 6:37-40; 10:27-30; Rom 8:1, 38-39; 1Co 1:4-8; 1Pe 1:4-5.
b. We believe the Scriptures teach it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God’s Word, which, however, clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an occasion to the flesh.
Rom 13:13-14; Gal 5:13; Tit 2:11-15.

The Church
a. We believe the Scriptures teach that a New Testament Church is an organized congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the Gospel; observing the ordinances of Christ; governed by His laws, and exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word; that its only Scriptural offices are Pastors (elders, bishops) and deacons, whose qualifications, claims, and duties are clearly defined in the New Testament.
1Co 12:12-14; 2Co 11:2; Eph 1:22-23; 5:25-27; Act 2:41-47.
b. We believe the Scriptures teach the purpose of the Church is found in the Great Commission, first, to make individual disciples, second, to build up the Church by baptizing those believers, third, to teach and instruct as He has commanded.
Mat 28:19-20.
c. We believe the Scriptures teach the establishment and continuance of New Testament Churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament Scriptures.
Mat 16:18; 28:19-20; Act 14:27; 20:17, 28-32; 1Ti 3:1-3; Tit 1:5-11.
d. We believe the Scriptures teach the autonomy of every New Testament Church, free of any external authority or control.
Act 13:1-4; 15:19-31; 20:28; Rom 16:1,4; 1Co 3:9,16; 5:4-7,13; 1Pe 5:1-4.
e. We Believe the Scriptures teach that baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the only Scriptural ordinances of obedience for the Church in this age.

The Ordinances of the Church
a. Baptism.
We believe the Scriptures teach that baptism is the immersion in water of the believer in Christ, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, performed with the Church’s authority; to show, by its symbolism, our faith in the crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, with its effect in our death to sin and resurrection to a new life; that it is the only pre-requisite to the privileges of Church membership.
Mat 28:19-20; Act 2:41; 8:12-13, 26-39; 9:17-18; 10:25-26, 44-48; 16:14-15, 25-37; 18:7-11; Mat 3:1-16; 21:24-25; Joh 3:22-23; 4:1-2; Gal 3:27-28; Rom 6:4; Col 2:12; 1Pe 3:15, 20-21.
b. The Lord’s Supper
We believe the Scriptures teach that the Lord’s Supper is a provision of unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine (grape juice) as symbols of Christ’s broken body and shed blood; partaken only by the members in good standing of the Church administering the ordinance, in commemoration of the suffering and death of their Lord, and in joyful anticipation of His return.
Mat 26:27-30; 28:20; Mar 14:20-26; Luk 22:19-20; 1Co 10:16; 11:2, 17-34.

Separation
a. Personal separation.
We believe the Scriptures teach that all the members of this Church should live in such a manner as not to bring reproach upon their Saviour and Lord. God commands His people to separate from all religious apostasy, all worldly and sinful pleasures, practices, and associations, and to refrain from all immodest and immoderate appearances, piercing, and bodily markings.
Rom 12:1-2; 14:13; 2Co 6:14-7:1; 2Ti 3:1-5; 1Jo 2:15-17; 2Jo 9-11; Lev 19:28; 1Co 6:19-20.
b. Ecclesiastical separation.
1) From governmental authority.
We believe the Scriptures teach that human government was instituted by God to provide justice and protection to its citizens. Human government has no authority over spiritual or church matters.
Gen 9:6; Rom 13:1-3; Act 5:29
2) From ecumenicalism and compromise.
We believe the Scriptures teach that churches are to separate from anything that is contrary to sound doctrine. Instead of associating with these “works of darkness,” New Testament churches are called upon to reprove these ecumenical and compromising individuals, preachers/teachers, and movements.
Rom 16:17-18; Eph 5:11

Rom 16:17-18; Eph 5:11
THe Lord's Day
We believe the Scriptures teach that the first day of the week is the Lord's Day, a joyful commemoration of His resurrection. We believe it should be kept sacred to spiritual purposes by abstaining from all unnecessary secular labor and recreation that would detract from the spirit of such a day; that it should be given over to the devout observance of all the means of grace, both private and public, and for the assembling together of the Lord's Church.

Heresy And APOSTACY
We believe the Scriptures teach that it is necessary to maintain a total and complete separation from all forms of heresy and ecclesiastical apostasy. We believe the Scripture admonishes us to try them, mark them, rebuke them, to have no Christian or Church fellowship with them, withdraw ourselves, receive them not, have no company with them, reject them, and separate ourselves from them.
Rom 16:17; 1Co 6:17; Eph 5:11; 2Th 3:6, 14; Tit 1:13; 3:10; 1Jo 4:1; 2Jo 10-11.

Giving
We believe the Scriptures teach that every Christian, as a steward of that portion of God’s wealth entrusted to him, is obligated to support his local Church financially. We believe that God has established the tithe (10% of pre-tax income) as a basis for giving, but that every Christian should also give other offerings sacrificially and cheerfully to the support of the Church, the relief of those in need, and the spread of the Gospel. We believe that a Christian relinquishes all rights to direct the use of the tithe or offering once the gift has been made.
Gen 14:20; Pro 3:9-10; Act 4:34-37; 1Co 16:2; 2Co 9:6-7; Gal 6:7; Eph 4:28; 1Ti 5:17-18; 1Jo 3:17.

Missions
We believe the Scriptures teach that God has given the Church a Great Commission to proclaim the Gospel to all nations so that there might be a great multitude from every nation, tribe, ethnic group, and language group who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. As ambassadors of Christ we must use all available means to go to the mission fields and not wait for them to come to us. Since the commission is given to the Church, it is the sending agent. We therefore do not use mission boards or clearinghouses in our mission work, nor do we support those who make use of these extra-Biblical methods.

Mat 28:19-10; Mar 16:15; Luk 24:46-48; Joh 20:21; Act 1:8; 2Co 5:20.
Love
We believe the Scriptures teach that all Christians should demonstrate love for others, not only toward fellow believers, but also toward both those who are not believers and those who oppose us. We are to deal with those who oppose us graciously, gently, patiently, and humbly. God forbids the stirring up of strife, the taking of revenge, or the threat or the use of violence as a means of resolving personal conflict or obtaining personal justice. Although God commands us to abhor sinful actions, we are to love and pray for any person who engages in such sinful actions.
Lev 19:18; Mat 5:44-48; Luk 6:31; Joh 13:34-35; Rom 12:9-10; 17-21; 13:8-10; Php 2:2-4; 2Ti 2:24-26; Tit 3:2; 1Jo 3:17-18.

Lawsuits Between Believers
We believe the Scriptures teach that Christians are prohibited from bringing civil lawsuits against other Christians or the Church to resolve personal disputes. We believe the Church possesses all the resources necessary to resolve personal disputes between members. We do believe, however, that a Christian may seek compensation for injuries from another Christian’s insurance company as long as the claim is pursued without malice or slander.
1Co 6:1-8; Eph 4:31-32.
1Co 6:1-8; Eph 4:31-32.
The Resurrection and last things
We believe the Scriptures teach that Jesus Christ rose literally and bodily from the dead on the third day; that having ascended into glory, He alone is our merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God; that this same Jesus shall return to earth bodily, personally, and visibly; first to raise the righteous dead and catch up all living believers in the twinkling of an eye, then to return with the saints to set up His glorious kingdom of a millennium of peace and righteousness, having executed judgment upon an unbelieving world; that at the final day of judgment all Christ-rejecting sinners will be raised, judged, and cast into the lake of fire for everlasting damnation, that the saved will live with Him for eternity according to the sure promises of God.

The eternal State
a. We believe the Scriptures teach the bodily resurrection of all men, the saved to eternal life, and the unsaved to judgment and everlasting punishment.
Mat 25:46; Joh 5:28-29; 11:25-26; Rev 20:5-6, 12-13.
b. We believe the Scriptures teach that the souls of the redeemed are, at death, absent from the body and present with the Lord, where in conscious bliss they await the first resurrection, when spirit, soul, and body are reunited to be glorified forever with the Lord.
Luk 23:43; 2Co 5:8; Php 1:23; 3:21; 1Th 4:16-17; Rev 20:4-6.
c. We believe the Scriptures teach that the souls of unbelievers remain, after death, in conscious punishment and torment until the second resurrection, when with soul and body reunited, they shall appear at the Great White Throne Judgment, and shall be cast into the Lake of Fire, not to be annihilated, but to suffer everlasting conscious punishment and torment.

The Unseen World
a. Of Angels.
We believe the Scriptures teach that there is a vast celestial kingdom of spirit beings called Angels, in ages past created holy, glorious, and higher than man; a vast company of various ranks worshiping God, ministering to His glorious Person and to His children.
Psa 148:2, 5: Col 1:16; Neh 9:6; Heb 1:14; Psa 103:20; 104:4; Dan 9:21-22; Luk 9:26; Mar 8:38; Dan 10:13; 12:1; Jud 9; Rev 12:7; Psa 80:1; 99:1, 11; Rev 4:6-8; Eze 1:4-28; Isa 6:1-3; 2Th 1:7-8; Psa 34:7; Act 12:7-11; 2Ki 6:17.
b. Of the Devil or Satan.
We believe the Scriptures teach that Satan, as the mighty angel Lucifer, was once holy, enjoying heavenly honours; but that through pride and ambition to be as the Almighty, fell and drew after him a host of angels; that he is now the malignant "prince of the power of the air," the unholy “god of this world;” that he is man’s great tempter, the enemy of the Lord Jesus Christ, the accuser of the saints, the author of all false religions, the chief power back of the present apostasy; the lord of the Antichrist, and the author of all the powers of darkness; destined however to final defeat at the hands of God's own Son, and the judgment of an eternal justice in hell, a place prepared for him and his angels.

We believe the Scriptures teach that there is a vast celestial kingdom of spirit beings called Angels, in ages past created holy, glorious, and higher than man; a vast company of various ranks worshiping God, ministering to His glorious Person and to His children.

Creation
We believe the Scriptures teach that God created the universe in six literal, 24-hour periods. We reject evolution, the Gap Theory, the Day-Age Theory, and Theistic Evolution as unscriptural theories of origin.
